Omega Lubricants Successfully applied in the Food Industry
Thanks to LubriTech Trading Company, our Omega distributor in Pakistan, we are delighted to share with you the second runner-up case of the “Omega Success Case Award”.
End-user Company – Dalda Foods (Pvt) Limited
Dalda Foods (Pvt) Limited (DFL), one of the largest cooking oils and Banaspati manufacturing and marketing companies in Pakistan, was incorporated in July 2004. It has an integrated sales network covering almost entire country. Current production capacity of the DFL’s factory is 150,000 tons per annum of Banaspati, cooking Oil, margarine and industrial fat. It has a semi continuous PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) controlled edible oil refining and deodorization line of 300 MT/day capacity and a continuous refinery of another 300 MT/day capacity for crude Palm Oil.
Omega Solutions
DFL is ISO 9001:2008, ISO 22000-2005, ISO 14001-2004 and OHSAS 18001-2007 certified company. DFL is highly conscious with food safety management and has stringent requirements on lubricating products for its manufacturing facilities. Previously, DFL used “S” brand of a) premium heavy duty gear oil (VG 320), b) high performance hydraulic oil (VG 68), c) synthetic air compressor oil (VG 46), and d) food grade grease (NLGI#2) for a) enclosed gearboxes (*of what type of equipment not disclosed), b) hydraulic presses & pumps, c) air compressors and d) bearings exposed to moisture in the factory. Performance of these lubricating products were not satisfactory:
- Viscosity of the compressor oil reduced shortly after application, and service life of all three types of “S” brand of oils was shorter than expected.
- Carbon deposit / sludge were formed in the compressor, gearboxes and hydraulic presses, affecting the operating life of these machines. In particular, the end-user reported that the deposit / sludge caused noticeable temperature rise in the compressor.
- Due to the premature failure of the oils mentioned in points 1 and 2, it took the end-users extra manpower and energy to maintain the gearboxes, hydraulic presses and compressor in normal operating condition.
- The end-user used to re-grease the bearings in wet areas once a week to prevent bearing failure, but the performance of the “S” brand of food grade grease was not satisfactory.
The above problems were resolved by switching to Omega 690 for the gearboxes, Omega 580 for the hydraulic presses, Omega 615 for the air compressors and Omega 58 for the bearings.
Re-lubrication interval of oils is drastically reduced. Now only top up is required for Omega 690. With Omega 58, re-greasing interval was extended from one week to one month and the bearing life was improved by about 3 times.
